about

Carrickfergus Town tells a story of home, family, friends, music, seaside and a fantastic castle. The song reflects John’s life experiences, love and feelings for this seaside town on Belfast lough in the North East of Ireland, where he grew up and still lives almost 60 years later. John Lindsay and Grainne McGlone wrote this nostalgic song during 2020 when Grainne had to move into John’s family home in the beautiful Carrickfergus Town so she could support other vulnerable members of her family during the worldwide pandemic.

lyrics

Carrickfergus Town (Lindsay/McGlone – May 2020)

When I was young I lived down by the shore

A Sandy Beach at our back door

My brother and me made an island in the sea

Our childhood life

In Carrickfergus Town

By the harbour

Rising out of Belfast Lough

A majestic Norman castle stands on solid rock

High up from the keep I look around

I see every part

of Carrickfergus Town

We built our family home in Glynpark

Beside my mother and my dad

Among the oak trees, chestnut and scots pines

Along Love lane

In Carrickfergus Town

Friends come over for an evening BBQ

Whistle and Guitar, violin and banjo too

The joy of music

Laughter all around

The very best of times

In Carrickfergus Town

My brother made his home no distance from my own

My sister on Red Brae at Copeland View

I am blessed with a loving wife

Our daughter travels far and wide

But she knows her home

Is Carrickfergus Town

I am older now been thinking of times past

Trials and tribulations but truth and love still lasts

I have my family

Friends are all around

I give thanks to the good people

Of Carrickfergus Town
